Cowbridge Physic Gardens
Travel back to a time when plants and herbs were essential for healing, cooking and dyeing.
Herb gardens were generally laid out formally and were havens of peace and tranquillity. Cowbridge Physic Garden has been created, planted and nurtured to give a true sense of physic gardens of old. It has the wide mix of plants, flowers and trees that would have been found in traditional herbalists’ gardens.
it is enclosed within high stone walls (parts dating back to the 13th century); and it offers a delightfully calm ambience, away from the pressures of 21st century life. Yet this fascinating haven of botanical beauty is just a short walk from Cowbridge High Street.
It was originally part of the 18th century formal garden laid out by the Edmondes
family when they inhabited Old Hall. Sadly neglected through the 20th century it took the hard work and determination of a group of volunteers to bring the Physic Garden dream to reality in 2007.
The site is relatively small, just half an acre (0.2 ha), but the variety of plants is vast and fascinating. Planned to reflect physic gardens from the 17th and 18th centuries it is more than a living history lesson, it is full of colour, fragrance, texture and fascination.
Having graciously performed the official opening in the summer of 2008, HRH Duchess of Cornwall has agreed to become the garden’s official patron.
