The Old Stables Cowbridge

The Old Stables is rather special. A superbly renovated 18th C stone stable with many original features and set in its own private walled courtyard, within the historic Cowbridge conservation area, adjacent to the open countryside of the Vale of Glamorgan, but only 12 miles from the centre of Cardiff.

Turn up the lane from the courtyard gates and, after a walk through the glorious countryside have lunch or a drink in the Bush Inn, in the historic village of St Hilary.Turn down the lane and be in the centre of Cowbridge in 5 minutes and discover why it is referred to as the "Bond Street of Wales".

Of an evening you can walk to a different restaurant every night of your stay and try out the towns fine pubs and wine bars.

During the day, although Cowbridge can entertain you throughout your stay, you may wish to explore some of the areas unique features, such as Dunraven Bay or the nature reserve at Kenfig Pool

Within the stable, photographs cannot do justice to the spectacular living room with its limewashed walls, high ridged ceiling and its mellow original timberwork. The two huge, west facing rooflights flood the room with natural light from dawn to dusk making it a real risk that you may spend your holiday in here reading from our wide selection of books.

In warm weather with the large stable door open, the room integrates seamlessly with the courtyard, the thick stone walls providing a cool haven within. Whilst the rooms height gives it a feeling of spaciousness its thick stone walls, modern insulation and sophisticated heating system keep it warm even in the coldest weather.

The living room has two sofas, freeview TV, DVD and a dinning table that comfortably seats 6. At one end stone steps lead up to the bathroom and bedrooms.

The charming east bedroom with its timber ridged ceiling and handmade door overlooks the courtyard below. The double bed is flanked on either side by fitted wardrobes creating an intimate space enhanced by the stainless steel bedside lamps with their individual integral dimmers. The bedside pockets in the side of the wardrobe provide an elegant and original design solution to the somewhat dated concept of bedside tables.

The day bed room is wonderfully light with two rooflights and a double window overlooking Coxen Lane. It is inviting and is loved by visitors and has surprises at every turn, whether it is the split level ceiling above the bathroom, or the purpose made chest below the bed or even the ad-hoc dressing table by the window. The day bed room although compact, has a full size double bed and a wardrobe.

The kitchen has an electric fan oven, full size gas hob, microwave, fridge-freezer, washing machine, and dishwasher. It has been carefully designed to fit within the stable's hay store, maintaining the immense limestone floor slabs and creating a tiny feature window from the original cooling slot. The combination of the large rooflight set into the high ceiling, the slate slabs from the old dairy and original bricks make this an original and inviting place to cook.

The fully equipped bathroom has a Grohe thermostatic shower above the bath. The ceiling above is shaped to the roof and incorporates a skylight, which in addition to flooding the area with natural light, is superbly efficient at removing steam.
